Description

The school opened with an initial intake of 137 eleven to twelve year-old pupils on the 4th September 1973, with eight full-time teachers and two part time. Over the past thirty years, Flitwick has expanded and so has the school. Currently there are almost 790 pupils on roll with a teaching staff of 37, one of the largest Middle Schools in the country.

It was purpose built as a Middle School with a second phase of building opening three years later in 1976. To cope with the demand of increasing numbers between March 1987 and March 1989 new extensions and alterations were made to the buildings, enabling excellent facilities to be offered to the pupils, catering for 600 in total.

The most recent extensions completed in 2001 provide a further six classrooms and two changing room areas, raising the capacity of permanent buildings to 720. Further building is not anticipated as projected numbers in the coming years indicate a decline.

Over the past thirty years there have been five Headteachers appointed, all previously Headteachers of other schools in the country. Arthur Ganderton took over the leadership when the school opened, previously Headteacher of Flitwick Junior School. He was succeeded by Gerry Clarke, previously Head of Goldington Middle in Bedford, followed by Colin Henderson, ex Head of Burgoyne Middle School in Potton. Andrew Alsop came to Flitwick from Abbey Middle in Bedford and after seven years as Head was succeeded by Alison Byrne who had previously worked as a Head in middle schools in Northampton. Since September 2007, the Head has been Jeff Conquest, who came to the school from Arnold Middle School in Barton-le-Clay.
